Description
How is this both virtual and IRL?
You’ll receive materials in the mail before the workshop, and at the end of the workshop, you’ll pack up your Zine in the envelope provided, send it in, and get back in the mail a copy of everyone’s Zine from the class!
In this workshop …
We’ll explore the narrative arc of your life’s story through a few small stories you will create in Zine form (What is a Zine (pronounced Zeen)? The word Zine represents small-batch, DIY, magazine-like publications in terms of form and content.
People who create zines (“zinesters”) are likely to be more motivated by self-expression and artistic passion than they are by profit: zines are usually inexpensive and sometimes distributed for free or in trade for other zines, goods, and services.
Zines can touch on a variety of topics from music to art, to politics, sexuality, humor, and personal memoir. Their content may be written, drawn, printed, collaged, or any other form of combining words and imagery—a zine’s structure may be narrative, journalistic, comic-like, or completely abstract.
In this workshop, you will:
-
- Plumb your life stories for a narrative arc
- Learn to extract the core of your story into a minimal form
- Express stories from your life in Zine form by using art processes in addition to writing processes
- Emerge with the inspiration to continue the process
- Gain tools for creating zines on any topic your heart desires
- Understand how story works and how the pieces illustrate the whole
- Receive IRL materials to help you both during the workshop and help you continue the process after the workshop ends
- Receive a copy of each workshop member’s zine in the mail following the workshop
This half-day workshop costs $225, with a materials fee of $20, for a total of $245.
