Day 5 :: Give your blanket to your mom and go to New Hampshire

Wow, what a challenge, Patti! Thank you for helping spark this great conversation between me and my 8-year-old, Mia. Having been through the death of untold numbers of slippery, squishy, and furry pet friends, it’s not a new subject for us. But this was different. Personal. Sweet and sad and silly all at the same time.

Many, many thanks.

This one got me. Yep. I love Mia’s sweet list and I love that she and her mom had this conversation. We so often avoid these talks with kids.

Her impulse is for giving.

My thanks, Mia, for sharing your full heart and your lunch money with all of us. Your mom and dad are very lucky to have you in their life.

Sometimes, as adults, I fear we think too much. Perhaps we can follow Mia’s lead and put down our clever and pick up our ordinary. Follow our impulse.

Two copies of Life is a Verb will fly on a big plane to Mia and Aimee in Missouri, with my love for this memorable trip into innocence and light. If anyone is reading this in New Hampshire or The Netherlands or from a theme park, let’s send her some postcards from there, shall we? Send postcards to me for her and I’ll forward them to Mia: patti digh, p.o. box 18323, asheville, nc 28814 USA.

If you’d like to answer the question, "What would you be doing today if you only had 37 days to live?", send your answer via email with a photo and your mailing address. Those posted before the official publication date of Life is a Verb (Sept 2) will receive a signed copy of the book!

And I’ve decided to continue this process for 37 weeks
, so one entry will be chosen to receive a signed book each week for 37 weeks after the book makes its official appearance in the world, so keep sending them in! Your answer can take any form you’d like…

Mia–you have made MY day complete as I get ready to toddle off to bed.

Thank you–your sweet voice will send me off to dream about favorite blankets, hamsters, and reconsidering my feelings about theme parks (except, of course, our own Santa Cruz Boardwalk!). And giving my books to my school! YES.
