Sweet Simplicity

(photo from here)

Backstory: In the last quarter of 2013, we got rid of half of what we owned, moved to a smaller house, and are focusing on simplicity. Each Saturday, I will document some of the ongoing changes we are making to simplify, step off the consumerism wheel, and open more space for experiences rather than things.

Some of the questions we are asking include: What am we buying on a regular basis that we don’t need to buy or can make at home more inexpensively? How can we reduce the numbers of chemicals we are bringing into our home? What small changes can we make that will have a positive impact on the environment? What is the difference between want and need, and how has that been distorted by American consumerism? How can we simplify our lives, either by eliminating unneeded items, stresses, or processes–or by streamlining the processes we do need?

Please note that NONE of the links in my posts are “affiliate links.” I don’t participate in affiliate programs. If I like something, I write about it, plain and simple.

Organizing

Instead of just “how,” I’ve been looking at “why” to be organized.  Of course, once the “why” is clear, help with the “how” is great.

This comes very close to the system I use for making and organizing notes for book projects.

In trying to reduce our grocery bills because of the food we waste, I found this interesting. What helpful hints do you have regarding food expense and waste?

Financial

I guess you could say we are into radical investing –investing in the now, investing in the radical idea that less will make us happier, investing in the local economy, and more.

Household Stuff

Love this DIY hand scrub.

Want great smelling towels?

I’ve been using foil dryer balls, and am going to try these wool ones to see which I like best.

I used to really LOVE the pine cones that would make our fires different colors when I was a child. Am going to try this version soon! (Beware the creosote warning in the comments, and don’t burn too many of them)

Tough time falling asleep? I’m trying some of these suggestions,  including the DIY dream pillow (mine will be lavender) is on the horizon for me.
