happy birthday, daddy.

Daddy's Grave

My father would be 86 today, had he lived past his 53rd birthday. Happy birthday, Daddy.

I took a side trip today. Off I-40 West and onto the downtown Morganton exit. Thanks to your directions and your blond building on the corner descriptions, I saw your Daddy’s barber shop. And I saw where you roller skated. Down the side alley sidewalk to the back door. Intimidating little sidewalk I’m sure to you as a young elementary school age girl, I saw you with your Pippi LongStocking red hair skating happily along the sidewalk. I saw you, eyes wide open, face intent on what you saw and heard, hanging out in the barber shop each afternoon with your Daddy. And smelling the old shoe shop that was next door. The odor that only leather shoes, shoe dye, mink oil and show polish can make. Thank you for sharing your Daddy’s barber shop. And the glimpse of a day in the life of you, and of any of us, as a young child in small town USA. Hanging out with our Daddy. Happy Birthday to your Daddy.
