A Reddi Wip Day

ReddiwipI’m not the sort, ahem, but if I were, today would have been a  Straight-from- the- can- into- your- mouth Reddi Wip kind of day. At 4:58 p.m., I hit <send>, and all 84,372 words swept out of my computer into the ether, like magic, to the publisher.

What remains is creating a DVD with the 107 pieces of art that flowed into my world from readers of 37days. Incredible, incredible, incredible. The art itself is amazing, and the stories behind the art are fantastic. I’m going to ask each artist to write a short paragraph, if they are willing, about why they created the image they did–the back-story, if you will.

One of the artists, Katie Green, attends the "Bridging Differences Book Club" I host at a local bookstore each month (next month’s book is Junot Diaz’ Drown, if you’re interested), and our meeting was tonight.

Katie said she loved the community art aspect of this 37days project and we brainstormed about ways to continue it–as one of the commenters suggested.

Perhaps opening up 24-hour windows of time after essays are posted on 37days for artists to interpret the essay and post their illustration for possible inclusion on 37days (and, perhaps, a future book?) I’m open to suggestions, if folks are interested to play, create art, noodle on some stuff together, see what we see….

For the moment, what I really need is a cup of Earl Grey Lavender tea, a hot shower, maybe just a tiny snort of Reddi Wip just to be polite, and some sleep in a big quiet bed.

  • I think it would be great to come up with some kind of ongoing project . . . . this has been so motivational! Being a part of a group that shares similar interests and goals just has a way of bringing out the best in all of us. :o) Nina

  • All the “continue the spirit” ideas are marvelous ones which I would hope to witness–it has been a blast to see what people have done and posted on the Flickr group–and, at the same time, I know I’m done, Patti. Not at all from any lack of anything except lack of desire…my own foray into the visual arts to send my modest contribution to 37days has sold me on the fact that there is a reason I write songs, make music, tell stories, and write other stuff of all varieties.

It was fun amidst the terror for me, creating my challenge card. Where my passion lies, the terror is more like tiny fear, and the fun is more like, well, like things we don’t talk about directly in a family blog like 37days, but all of them beat the hell out of Reddi-wip.

Tonight, I’m happiest for you to have gotten the manuscript headed back to the publisher! Congratulations on that achievement, and on the inspiration to invite many artists (and some artist-wannabees) to come play, too.

Sleep well, Patti!! (oh…there’s a little dab of white stuff there on the left side of your mouth…no, a little higher…yeah, you got it!)

  • This is me clinking my can of Reddi-Wip with yours…cheers! Congratulations! :)

  • I love the idea of keeping it going, but I’m not sure that I’ll be along for the ride. Or maybe I will … It was an important, profound, personal growth experience for me, playing along with you and all the others and I’m not sure that it can be repeated or sustained.

I’m so happy for you, that you have your manuscript sent off! I’ve been thinking about you a lot these past few days, wondering where you were in the process. I knew you’d let us know when you were finished, but still, I’ve been so curious.

For me, it’s hot chocolate with LOTS of marshmallow fluff. Or is that fluff with a bit of hot chocolate? It’s hard to tell! I haven’t even imbibed, yet. I think I’ll join you in your vice and make a cup right now.

I’ll be happy to provide you with paragraphs about my Challenge Cards, but I can’t promise you they’ll be short! LOL! You’ve already read about my process for some of my work; short, my explanations were not!

Get some sleep, my friend. I’m so proud of you, and everyone who worked along side of you.

  • Man, what a rush…

    What a wonderful experience too!

  • Sally

Congratulations on sending your book out into the (much larger) community of the world — it’s not actually the ether where it’s going, after all….

  • Congratulations Patti! It must be a wonderful, wonderful feeling.

And an ongoing project would be wonderful! Wake up the creativity hiding away in all of us.

  • tameraabate

So glad you are finished! Congratulations! I can’t wait to see it on the bookshelves.
I can see your wheels are already spinning on the next project. Isn’t it great how one good thing leads to another and another?
Rest up, you’ll no doubt need it!

  • Susan

    Congratulations! Get some sleep:)

  • Lori Pelham Cobbs

    bravo!! how exciting?!!!

  • Congrats! I put whip-cream on my hot chocolate and some straight into my mouth tonight in your honor. :-)

  • Joy

Congratulations, Patti! What an accomplishment! I can’t wait to own a copy!

Blessings and a good night’s sleep to you. . .

  • Adding my song to the chorus…congratulations on a BIG milestone reached. It’s got to feel great and you should definitely CELEBRATE!

From the sidelines, I’m guessing the coolest part is that you’ve done something that will, indeed, go out into the ethers and will run into, over and through people all over the place. wow.

Ongoing art involvement would be GREAT. Will watch for more on that.

    thank yoU, Patti.

  • wow- that is approx. one ATC for every 788 words!

    amazing!

  • It’s fabulous to have found you and your work right in the middle of this flurry of excitement! I’m really looking forward to the book coming out, so I can get a copy immediately! :-).

I hope you will do a tour talking about it, because there is something both deeply magical and emergent about what happened here. I love the combination of community and creativity, and think it’s an area ripe for development.

When you catch your breath, come visit me in the beauty dialogues – I have the feeling you have a lot to say on the subject (of beauty)! :-)

    All blessings to you,

    Amy

  • Congratulations and do enjoy that long sleep.

  • 37 Days

Another gem sent from beauty-sister Nancy White (who’s launched her new blog site yesterday!) – this one a joyously inspiring blog by writer Patti Digh. Her blog is called 37 Days, and it’s about what we would be doing today

  • Miss G. Marshall

Sleep? No way…time to start the next installment. But congratulations nevertheless. I think this book, despite the agony and ectasy of it all, is your something to live for.
