your daily rock : turn around and look

You know those iconic photographs so many of us recognize? Those scenes from shared human history that are seared into our collective memories? The flag-raising at Iwo Jima, the young man in front of the tank at Tiananmen Square, the execution of Nguyen Van Lém by Nguyen Ngoc Loan during the Vietnam war, and so many more.

My husband, John, is always more interested in turning around to look at the watchers, the scene behind the camera. I love that about him. And I have finally learned that from him. On a business trip a few years ago, I stood on the balcony of my hotel room and took photos of a spectacular Florida sunset. Only when I turned to go back into the room did I realize that the more beautiful vision was behind me, the big puffy clouds onto which the sunset was reflected as onto a screen.

There is something more than what we see.

Turn around, look.

Love,
