We’ve all heard this before: be part of the solution.

And yet many of us don’t step up. Sure, we pass along petitions and posters and shocking news stories on Facebook and Twitter, but often that’s the extent of it.

Perhaps it’s because there is so, so much that needs doing.

Perhaps it’s because we believe that surely someone else is doing something about it.

Perhaps it’s because we believe that someone more qualified will step in.

All of those things might be true. But they also may not be true.

As Barbara Hall wrote: “You’re alive. Do something. The directive in life, the moral imperative was so uncomplicated. It could be expressed in single words, not complete sentences. It sounded like this: Look. Listen. Choose. Act.”

Don’t be a bystander.
