your daily life : only kindness matters

A few years ago, as part of a live radio interview, a journalist asked me what I wanted to have written on my tombstone. I answered without hesitation, though I hadn’t thought of it before: “She was kind and she was generous.

To me, kindness is holy. And it is generous. Both are heart-focused, and if I had to describe an action that might represent them both, it would be of a heart opening up–to ourselves, and to others. Because in order to be truly and authentically kind and generous to others, we must first extend that grace to ourselves. That, in fact, might be the harder to do. I often think of what the Dalai Lama has written: “My religion is very simple. My religion is kindness.” Why do we imagine this is only kindness directed outward, and not inward as well, I wonder?

What is your answer to that journalist’s question? Are you living in a way that will inspire those words to be engraved on that tombstone after you are gone? If not, what needs to change?

Love,
