your daily rock : say “I,” not they

“Optimism is a strategy for making a better future. Because unless you believe that the future can be better, you are unlikely to step up and take responsibility for making it so.”  -Noam Chomsky

We must see ourselves in the stories of need we see on the nightly news. What keeps us from doing that? What makes it possible to disassociate so radically that we do not demand the changes that must occur for people to live and die in dignity, not in squalor, in fear, in hopelessness?

We must consider ourselves part of the solution in order for any change to occur. We must be optimistic in order to do that.

Instead of asking “why aren’t they doing more?” I must ask, “why aren’t we doing more?” and, finally, “why am I not doing more?”

Love,
