A Call for Art!

IMG_6049 I have begun to realize that part of my work in the world is opening up space for others to express their artistic visions, craft their own stories, speak in their own voices.

So I am immensely appreciative of the fact that my publisher shares my vision of creating opportunities for artists, poets, and writers to be published, creating artistic and literary barn raisings and not just books, as my friend Mike Wagner so aptly put it when Life is a Verb was published with art from readers from around the world.

I'm working on a new book, What I Wish For You, that will be published in April 2011 (details to follow). And yet again, I'm opening up a creative process to include artists from around the world. If you'd like to be on the list to receive an essay to illustrate for that book (mid- to late-September 2010 would be the time frame), fill out this form and submit. Only those artists who complete this form will receive the invitation to participate in mid-September, even if you've contributed to my books in the past.

I hope you'll consider it! These books filled with art from people just like you are a beautiful expression of community, creativity, and–sometimes–courage.

You can submit art for up to two essays (to be randomly assigned to you). How many essays would you like to submit for? One essay will keep me nice and busy!
Two is a nice round number!

  • I am truly impressed with the pace of your publishing!!! Can’t wait for all the new books.

  • I keep wanting to submit my name. Then I wonder what on earth I could offer, and besides, I’ll be competing with lot of accomplished artists, etc. etc.

  • Kathryn, maybe there is a different story you could tell yourself about this. Many of the people who have submitted art have written to say, “I’m not an artist, but I wanted to contribute.” They are all artists, as are you. This is less a competition than a community of humans expressing something they need or want to express. It isn’t about professionalism or accomplishment, but about generosity of vision, about the process, not the result. I hope you’ll sign up for the next book project!
