One day I sat on a plane beside a man who studies teen brains. "Really?!" I said. "Tell me." "They aren't like adult brains," he said. I smiled. "Even the most academic question lights up the emotional part of teen brains. They don't process information like we do. To expect them to respond rationally and not emotionally is to constantly be disappointed." That was a helpful plane conversation. After that moment, I stopped expecting what wasn't and started understanding what was.
