Let’s raise another barn together!

Life is a verb When art started pouring in for Life is a Verb, I was knocked down by the love and generosity of all the people who contributed. Beautiful, gorgeous, meaningful art from around the world. My friend Mike Wagner said it was like watching a literary and artistic barn raising. It was magic. Here's a reminder of how that all happened. Now, my friends, it's time to create another work of art masquerading as a book.

Yesterday I signed a contract with Globe Pequot Press for another book, this one focused on how we can live more creative, artful lives--whether we consider ourselves artists or not (and whether we consider our lives a work of art, or not). Tentatively entitled Creative is a Verb, it will be out next summer. (Got good title ideas? Let me know! I thought Johnny is a Verb might be a good choice, but–oddly–I don't think the publisher will agree.)

This new book – like Life is a Verb – isn't to be illustrated only by those of you who already identify as artists, but also by kids and teachers and electricians and moms and bankers and Sufi mystics masquerading as computer technicians–and by those of us who shrink from saying "I'm a writer" or "I'm an artist." If you are alive, you are an artist. Your life? The canvas, the potter's wheel, the studio.

If you'd like to receive the "official call for art" that will be sent out in early September, let me know by filling out the form below. In the meantime, here's to making every single day a work of art (even the ones filled with travel or homework or laundry or children having fits because you have the audacity to ask them to sleep):

Name:
Email Address:
Country:
You can submit art for up to four essays (to be randomly assigned to you). How many essays would you like to submit for? One essay will keep me nice and busy!
Two is a nice round number!
Three will spark my artistic genius!
Four essays will nearly kill me but I'd enjoy trying!

I just love it, your artist community. I think my personal verb preference would be “Art is a Verb”. Or the working title “The Sky, it has no limit” or “The napkin without a sketch wipes your face, but not your mind” or “Creative is an Action Hero”
    Best wishes on your book-

  • I have your book and love – so excited another one is in the works. Congratulations!

  • How about “Everyone’s an Artist” or “Everyone’s a Creative Genius” — or some variation like “We’re All Artists” or “Yes, You Are an Artist” or “You Are Too an Artist”…?

p.s. — my mother LOVE LOVE LOVED your book, thank you for sending it to her! She wasn’t sure if it was for me or from me, since living in Japan often means I have stuff sent to her to send to me. She was worried it was for me, and then she couldn’t keep it! She LOVES it — thank you!

Oh Boy! I’ve done it now! I’ve thrown my hat into a ring my inner critic says I have no business being in. Excuse me while I hyperventilate a while.

  • How exciting! This next book will be much anticipated by ME! I just finished reading ‘life is a verb’ in 5 days…I could NOT put it down! I will return it to the Fletcher library tomorrow so that the next lucky person will have it to read and I plan to get my own copy soon so that I can work on the ‘assignments’ and memorize as many of the quotes as I possibly can! I have told everyone I know about your book and shared quotes on my blog. It has really affected my life in a positive way…at the perfect time! Thank you so much! I hope I have the pleasure of meeting you some day and giving you a thank you HUG!

Congrats on the new book deal! How exciting for you and all of us who again have the opportunity to tap into our creativity! I’d love for my young daughters to be involved as well. Thanks Patti!

  • I can’t believe I’m commenting before my mom and sisters but here goes!

I put in for one so as not to be gluttonous, but send as many as you wish. I think perhaps my mom, sisters, and cousin should all make some and send them!

  • Eeek! I can’t believe I just did that…signed up, I mean. I do agree with you though, we’re all artists in some fashion. I have no idea what’s in store, but what the heck! Sounds like fun, so I’m in. ;o)

I just signed up for one because I’m a little bit chicken, but if you want to send more, just to see if I’ll REALLY freak out, go ahead. I dare you. ;o)

Carolynn (P.S. Congratulations on another book signing!!!)

  • Re: book title ideas, without knowing the content, how about:

    – Art is a Verb
    – Life is Art
    – Life is an Art

  • Creative is Everywhere
    I am Art

I can’t wait for the new book!:)
