A is for Ankle

AnklelatI was on the ground without warning, my palms bearing the brunt of the sudden fall. It surprised me, this new ground-level viewpoint; I was down in the dark, my bag having splayed its belongings around me on the rough sidewalk concrete. “Where is my Burt’s Bees pomegranate lip balm?” I remember thinking. And then David was kneeling beside me: “Are you okay?” he asked.

“I knew we were in trouble,” he said months later in recounting the story of that evening, “when Patti turned her head very slowly toward me and quietly said ‘no.’”

I insisted that David get me in the car quickly so as not to bother the family whose home we had just left after a wonderful evening of talking about dorodango. “I don’t want them to feel responsible in any way,” I told him, “let’s just get going.” He helped me to the car. In the meantime a neighbor had seen the two of us splayed on the ground in front of Bruce’s house and was knocking on their front door, no doubt to warn them of the two people who were evidently sleeping on their lawn. We sped off.

“It’s okay,” I said, “let’s just go back to the hotel.” David looked sideways at me as he drove. Just then, I put pressure on my ankle on the floorboard of the car to put my foot more fully back into my shoe, and it rolled, liked a rollercoaster rolls and goes upside down, in ways that are not natural. A pain shot all the way up my leg. I sat quietly with that information for a moment. “Or not,” I continued. “I think I might need a hospital.” I tried feeling my ankle through my sock. It was, to use sophisticated and modern medical terminology, huge. I tried again to put weight on it. It rolled again, unable to hold still even while sitting.

We left the emergency room eight hours later, slept for less than an hour, and gave a 2-hour workshop the next morning on crutches and in an air splint, skittering on the very edge of a pain so severe it made me nauseous—all before being able to get my prescription for pain killers filled. It was the best workshop we’d ever done, from which I learned six things:

1) Don’t over prepare – we didn’t have the opportunity to do our usual pre-session night-before final planning, so were by necessity completely tuned into what was unfolding in the room rather than what we wanted to unfold.

2) Be completely present – there is nothing like extreme pain to ground you in the present. Having not prepared the evening before, we were acutely attuned to every nuance in the room. There was nothing but “now” in that room that morning.

3) Some things just don’t need doing – moving is overrated. When on crutches and in pain, every movement hurts. It’s amazing how much we move that we don’t need to move. Sit still, stop moving your head, ground yourself.

4) Give up owning the room to the people in it – it’s easy, as a teacher or trainer, to want to perform or be liked or be smart or funny or impressive…but learning isn’t about you—it’s about them. Open up the space for them, and get out of the way.

5) Admit your vulnerability – I had to own my pain before that group, to be fully human with them, to invite them into the solution.

6) Don’t buy into other people’s descriptions of your condition – it was only after I got home that my doctor here (and, more importantly, my brilliant physical therapist—if you’re in the Asheville area and ever need one, he’s the one for you, just call and I’ll give you his name) determined the full extent of my injuries—not a “sprain” as the Albuquerque hospital indicated, but “complete disruption” of all ligaments around my right ankle, as well as a fractured talar joint. Had I known at the time, I wonder if I would have been able to give that workshop? Would I have bought into the severity of my condition and given up? Maybe.

Six months in a fracture boot and now a brace, the lessons still hold.

  • Ouch! You’re absolutely right, if we let the room guide the teaching, we become better teachers — a theory I’d like to put to the test without the fractured ankle!

    I am a retired art teacher and I once had to explain to an observing Principal that yes, the middle schoolers were talking and that I wanted them to. The lesson was to design a character for a children’s book and write a short story to go with it and they were bouncing ideas off of each other. Creativity doesn’t always occur in a vacuum. Ideas stimulate ideas (reminds me of a poem that I wrote once!). We’re going to Maggie Valley Sunday to do a craft show next week-end at Lake Junaluska. So I will be in your neighborhood. Hope your ankle is better!

  • Oops!! Take care…Prticipative learning is good.But i am not sure if it wll really wok out when the deadlines are tough and a lot of data has to be conveyed.

    In India, very recently they have introduced the concept of activity based learning in government schools. This method encourages students to participate and create mind maps of the lessons. the teacher guides them and corrects their mistakes.

    J.Krishnamurthy was a pioneer in introducing these type of schools and implemented it several years before, privately.

    Staying focused on learning, my A is for Apple, one of the words my 18-month-old boy can now say so clearly. When he said it this morning, mimicking what his sister had just said, I stopped and listened and reminded myself to learn as much from them as I in my high-mindedness assume they are learning from me.

    I am so glad I started with A is for Ankle. I am a middle school math teacher and so often I find myself taking center stage with the lesson rather than letting the students guide each other’s learning. I shall do better.
